The best things to do in Porto

Ten activities you can book, with my opinion up front.

This is my top ten of bookable things to do in Porto. I picked from the best reviewed on GetYourGuide, then wrote what I think of each, without pretending to like everything.

The order follows the reviews, with one openly admitted exception: the Six Bridges cruise comes last because it is one of the most booked things in the city, not because it is the best.

This page has partner links. If you book through them, SerpaHouses may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you.

Pastel de nata workshop with cocktails

For years, a good pastel de nata meant Belém, in Lisbon, and that was it. Porto now has proper places (Manteigaria, Casa do Pastel de Nata, among others), and making one by hand with a cocktail beside you is a good way to close the argument.

Azulejo painting workshop with port wine

I'm an architect and I have never got tired of this city's tiled façades. Here you paint your own, glass in hand, which helps forgive the brushwork.

Cockburn's Port Lodge: tour and tasting

Among the Gaia lodges, it is one of the best rated. The tasting with food pairing is what sets it apart from the one-glass visits.

Fado at Casa da Guitarra, with port wine

I rarely go, but it is always memorable, and I'm sorry I don't go more often. One hour of fado in a music shop, far from the big stages.

  5. See the city

    Porto highlights by e-bike

The city is all hills. An electric bike lets you see everything without reaching the top begging for an ambulance.

  6. With a view

Graham's Port Lodge: tour and tasting

It sits high in Gaia and I've been: the view over the river and Porto is worth half the ticket. It costs a bit more than the other lodges, but the place justifies it.

  7. Eat and drink

    Food and wine walking tour

In Porto wine is always keeping us company, even with food. On this one, at least, there is a meal and an excuse.

  8. Photo: Wikimedia Commons Another cellar

    Taylor's cellars and port tasting

Ohhh, another cellar. Yes, but this one has 1692 on its résumé and an audio guide in 13 languages, so you go at your own pace.

    FC Porto: museum and tour

It pains me to write this, because I support Boavista, not Porto. But I admit it: if you love sport, it's worth it.

  10. Almost compulsory

    Six Bridges cruise

I have done it and I have no wish to repeat it. But for visitors, it is one of those things we feel obliged to do.
