Matosinhos at sunset — beach, sea and city life
Guide · Matosinhos

Sea, seafood
and local life

My recommendations for Matosinhos — the places I send to my guests when they ask what to do. All within walking distance of the Serpa Beach House.

This is the list I share with Beach House guests every time they ask what to do in Matosinhos. These are the places I go to myself — organized by what you might feel like eating or doing. It is not a tourist guide. It is what I would tell a friend coming to spend a few days here.

Matosinhos has three things few cities have together: fish that arrived this morning, an urban beach with Atlantic scale, and the neighborhood life you can feel the moment you leave the metro. The rest is for you to discover.

Fish & Seafood

The essentials

The three below are practically side by side, right across from the fishing harbor. It is where the fish arrives first. Any of them is a safe choice — but for my guests, this is always where I start.

Lage Senhor do Padrão My pick

by the fishing harbor

Right across from the harbor. Fresh grilled fish with the simplicity that is the rule here. Do not look for elaboration — look for the sea bream, the sea bass, or the sardines on the coals.

Meia-Nau

by the fishing harbor

A few meters from Lage. Seafood and the catch of the day. No-fuss atmosphere, as it should be when the product speaks for itself.

Serrão

by the fishing harbor

The third reference in the area. These three are so close to each other that you can walk by and choose by what is on the grills that day.

When the product is this good, the rest is just not getting in the way.
Traditional Portuguese

When you fancy meat

O Clássico

Authentic Portuguese cuisine. The specialty is roasted goat and veal — serious dishes, for those who want to understand how northern cooking sounds when done slowly.

Portuguese sandwiches

Casual lunch

A Badalhoca do Fredo

2 min walk

The neighborhood tavern. Traditional Portuguese sandwiches, local crowd, fair prices. The place for a quick meal that does not feel touristy — literally on the doorstep of the house.

Burgers

When the craving changes

Munchie

5 min walk

Cozy and friendly, with a nice terrace. Known for well-made burgers — a good midweek alternative.

Café da Praça My pick

17 min walk

In the city center, lively atmosphere. My favorite around there — the kind of place where you stay longer than you planned.

Pizza

Italian, the real thing

Antonio Mezzero

7 min walk

One of the best pizzas you will find — crafted by a chef from Naples. Not just any pizza, the real thing, where the dough and the oven make the difference.

Pizzaria Luzzo

16 min walk

Thin-crust pizzas, modern and relaxed atmosphere. For a more informal dinner without ceremony.

Steakhouse

A different experience

Terminal 4450

20 min walk

Steakhouse in a converted old terminal. The experience is as much about the place as the food — worth the walk.

Natural & Vegetarian

For a lighter day

Picaba

20 min walk

Inside the Edifício Transparente. Natural, healthy food in a space with sea views. Ideal for lunch mid-walk to Foz.

Fava Tonka

22 min walk

Creative vegetarian cuisine, great atmosphere. For couples who want variety — or simply prefer this kind of cooking.

Breakfast & coffee

To start the day

Bonus: every café along the beach has a lovely vibe. You cannot go wrong. But if you want specific places:

Maurícia

8 min walk

Famous for the best cream-filled croissant in town. If you enjoy simple, well-made Portuguese pastries, it is a must.

Negra Café

15 min walk

Ideal for brunch — pancakes, eggs, good coffee. Modern atmosphere without being pretentious.

Terrárea

14 min walk

Breakfast or lunch inside a lush botanical shop. One of the most beautiful experiences in Matosinhos — eating surrounded by plants, in the middle of the neighborhood. Worth the detour.

To visit

What to do between meals

The Beach

a few minutes walk

Just a few minutes from the house. Plenty of surf and water sports schools available at the beach. In summer, if you are young (or want to feel like it), a surf lesson is one of the best memories you can bring home.

Mercado Municipal

Daily market with local produce, fresh fish, handicrafts, and a few restaurants inside. Go in the morning to see the authentic side, stay for lunch if you want to try the market food.

Castelo do Queijo

Small fort from 1668, built to protect Matosinhos after Portugal\u2019s independence. It is small, but the view is worth it — especially at the end of the day.

Parque da Cidade My pick

The largest park in northern Portugal. Lakes with ducks, wide green landscapes, bike paths. Go by bike, bring a picnic, stay an afternoon — it is where Matosinhos rests from itself.

Praia de Matosinhos com as rochas do Atlântico
The beach is the center of everything — without any elaboration.
The walk

From Matosinhos to Foz Velha

My pick recomendação favorita para um dia que esteja bom: fazer o passeio ao longo da costa, desde a marginal de Matosinhos até à Foz Velha. É um percurso longo — calculem tempo — mas com muitas paragens possíveis pelo caminho.

Stop: Praia da Luz My pick

About halfway through the walk, it is the natural stop — a café with a terrace facing the Atlantic. Sit down, have something to drink, watch the sea. Then carry on.

The walk gives you the coast, the smell of the sea, the fishermen\u2019s neighborhoods that still exist between Leça and Foz. One of the best ways to understand why this part of Porto is different.

If you are already at the Beach House — or on your way — any question during your stay just send a message. Which fish to order, what time to go to the market, whether to book in advance. I usually reply within 2 hours.

Before you come

Small details that help

Booking helps

The best seafood spots fill up on weekends — especially lunch. Book a day ahead if possible.

Meal times

In Portugal, lunch is between 12:30 and 14:30, dinner from 19:30 onwards. Outside these hours many kitchens close.

Wind and mist

This is the Atlantic coast — wind is part of the scenery. Bring an extra layer even in summer, especially late afternoon.
